The Evening Full of Cries from Afar

Or, Something is Afoot!

This is (a blurry photo of) Thursday's scorpion after release at the bottom of the hill. (He was #11 of 2007, by the way, for those who are counting.) While I was photographing, a giant ant ran by. I believe it is a velvet ant; see the golden fuzz at its back end? Plus it really was huge—almost as long as the scorpion, which was not a large one as scorpions go, but is pretty effing big for an ant.

After a while we headed back to the path up the hill, when suddenly we heard strange and bad barking-and-other sounds coming from across the valley. We all—Hugh and I, the dogs, Fritz the cat—heard and were disturbed. The dogs had ears and noses up and alert; we humans speculated that it was a dog/coyote face-off, with all the neighboring dogs voicing their interest in the outcome; and Fritz puffed immediately and ran, growling and meowing, up the path (though not straying too far from me and H).

Wild Fritter, Mr. Outdoors, came in with us when we got home and stayed in all night. He was out today, but this evening seems again wary of being out.
