Nesting: Sunday Afternoon

No feeding going on yet....just a lot of visits in and out of the hole. Eggs?

My Mother's Mockingbird

This mockingbird and its mate have a nest in the arborvitae that grows next to my mother's driveway. Clearly the eggs have hatched, and what a lovely big fat wormy thing to nourish the wee babes!

Westcave Preserve: Oh, the Excitement! Snakes & Birds

I went to a photography workshop today at Westcave Preserve. Wildlife sightings were a golden-cheeked warbler (the first I've ever seen in person) and a cottonmouth snake (also the first I've ever seen in person). So exciting! The warbler was directly overhead, so I got only these underneath shots. I can only improve.

Some people got very, very close to this cottonmouth snake. I stood back a little farther and used my zoom lens. Why tempt fate, I ask you?

Cross Vine

It grows on the arbor with the pink roses, and right on up into the cedar tree next to it, and in several other trees around the house. I thought most of it had died in the last freeze, but happily it's back!

Ermine Moth

I love how this moth looks like it's wearing a little ermine robe. So regal!

Woodie 2010: A View from the Porch

It's Been a Good Year for the Roses

Spectacular, in fact. These pink ones which came with the house are always the first to bloom, and always do so very early. Will Scarlet on the side of the house (behind me to the left, as I took this photo) is full of buds about to burst forth, and the Sombreuil in front has just begin to open its flowers.
