A Very Happy Texas Holiday!

I am positive that this century plant is celebrating the solstice. It
was a vision in red near 15th Street spotted on my way to work
yesterday.

The Butter Cow

Mrs B, thinking of you this evening as I make soup & cheesy
toast...have I told you lately how much we in this house love the
butter cow?

My Floridian Avocado

This avocado, given me by Fran & Groovy, was grown on their very own avocado tree. It is shown here nestled in my purse, in which it rode from Tampa back to Austin. It's almost bigger than my head! And is most delicious, to boot.

Sarasota Sunset

Those are giant pelicans there on the water; lots of them about this
evening.

Sea Grass

These grass stalks are about 6 feet tall and so lovely! All dry and
rustly.

Manatee Mailbox

We are SO getting one of these for the Cabin...

I don't know what this plant is. It's a woody vine growing near the driveway and until this year had never flowered nor had berries, but this year it did and does.

Moth on Mirror

I love this kind of moth! They sit on a surface as though they were a tiny airplane on a landing strip. Not that that is really demonstrated in this photograph—the mirror image looks more like Jesus on a cross, in fact—but they do.

Or so Hamilton wishes, anyway.

Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot!
I see no reason
Why gunpowder season
Should ever be forgot!

Happy Guy Fawkes Day!

The Moon and Photoshop

Dead Bug Backlog: Moth

I've had several dead insects lying around on my desk for a while now, waiting to be photographed. Here is the first.

Gretchen, I Found Out About the Butterflies

On Thursday October 15th a giant cloud of butterflies descended upon Austin; Gretchen and I saw them in different areas as we made our separate ways to our lunch date. I've never seen anything like it before; the entire sky was full of butterflies! I asked my mother the next day if she'd seen them; she hadn't, but showed me this article from the local paper that explains that they were snout butterflies on the hunt for food.

On Saturday I saw more of them, though much fewer in number overall, along RR12 and in Dripping Springs.

On Sunday, we had our own private little cloud of them in our meadow; they were going mad over just this one plant (though there are others like it nearby, and dozens of flowers are in bloom right now). It was beautiful and strange!

Tiny Bug Inside the Esperanza

Way, way deep inside the esperanza, and so tiny that I couldn't even tell through the lens, much less with my naked eye, if it actually was an insect or just part of the plant. It lives! It liiiiiiiiives!

Perfectly Innocent Spider in the Tub, Just Hanging Out, Not Bothering Anyone

Photo taken after taking the spider out of the tub. Then I had to take a photo to make sure it was not one of the kind who shall not be mentioned, because we haven't seen one for months now and don't want to jinx ourselves, especially since someone brought it up to me not three hours ago and then there this guy was. Shhh. We shall not speak of it again.

October Blooms IV

I planted this, but don't remember what it's called. I love its sparkliness.
