Taming the Spanish Dagger

I have trimmed the eye- and dog-level Spanish Daggers to prevent their razor-sharp points from putting out eyes or piercing the flesh of dogs. One point from the tall yucca fell to the ground and by itself went dagger-first into the earth.

Holy Cow!

Buffalo cow, that is. Apparently these are the new neighbors down the road!! I fervently hope they're there to live and not there for sport hunting or as a food crop. They are absolutely HUGE. I think one of these is taller at the shoulder than I am tall.

Five Giant Flower Stalks

Two of the stalks are on the other side of the plant; one is barely visible between the two blooms on the right side, and the other you can't see at all in this photo. But it's there!

Here is Hugh for scale.

Finches Nest in the Yucca

This finch is nesting in the yucca (and look, over her shoulder on the left is the female oriole). If you zoom in to the top image, you will see the straw in her mouth. In the second picture, she is leaving, after having put the straw in the space between the two yucca heads where their daggers intertwine.

And my computer is broken...again. This might be the last post for a week or two.

Spring is Coming

It was in the high 80s yesterday and today...a wee bit warm for some of us, especially as it's still only February. Nonetheless, I am happy to see plants beginning to bloom. These are the yuccas by the front patio; each day the blooms grow a little higher.
