Feeding the Neighbors

There are two more in pens, but Linny is allowed to roam free today, because he is a gentleman, says his person (our human neighbor).

Who is Eating Sunflower Seeds in Our Shed?

I left a paint rag on the shelf in the shed last weekend. Since then, something's been eating sunflower seeds in there and leaving the shells on the rag! What is it? A little mouse? Are they that tidy?

We Always Hang in a Buffalo Stance

We'll give you love, baby, not romance.

They were out again today. Is it too hot for them in Texas, or do they always have a little late-afternoon lie-down?

Holy Cow!

Buffalo cow, that is. Apparently these are the new neighbors down the road!! I fervently hope they're there to live and not there for sport hunting or as a food crop. They are absolutely HUGE. I think one of these is taller at the shoulder than I am tall.

Little Abode

See this little hole, so carefully built and established? Look, it is smaller than the tip of my finger (that is my index finger in a green gardening glove in the photo below). Who lives in there??

R.I.P Louis the Crab

My mother's hermit land crab Louis died last week. Our friend Hank decorated his grave and made this beautiful shell marker for it. We buried him with an extra shell and a little bit of apple.

Driving Home from the Tractor Supply: Part VII

While photographing the flag & roadrunner, I turned around, and there they were, watching me. I love them. I wanted to take them home with me. But I didn't.

Very adorably scratching its little itchy head on the fence

Giant Toad, Happy in Puddle

My toes for scale. I actually do have five toes, despite appearances.

An Armadillo Den?

I found this hole under an oak tree on Sunday, quite close to the house; I suspect that it's the home of our armadillo.

Sky and Texas Sotol

The sotol's dead bloom is slowly falling over, which you can't really tell from this picture, because it is falling toward where I was lying on the patio taking the photo. It takes a while for it to hit the ground.

The Cunning Frog (Toad?)

Frog or toad? He looks too smooth to be a toad. Hugh called me into the kitchen to see a giant red wasp flying upwards gripping something like a locust carcass (which I missed, except for the last dangling of legs moving upwards); when I went outside to see what there was to see, I found this guy perched on the top of the window frame. He was so still and small that I first took him for a mud dauber's nest; then I saw his little throat pulsing. I've never seen one with this unusual spotting around here before. Just went out to assess his size—he's not more than two inches long, and perhaps only one and a half inches.

The Toad On The Porch This Morning

The cats won't touch toads; they want nothing to do with them.

Bunny

Tuesday a.m. upon leaving for work I saw this wee bunny in the drive behind the house. I went back for the camera and he hopped away into the grass, but then apparently decided I could no longer see him and stopped. Larger than a kitten, but barely.

Tiny, puffy, cottony tail just visible in this photo
