Callie Dog Goes Under the Knife and Lives to Tell the Tale (Except, Being a Dog, She Cannot Talk)

Callie went to the vet on Friday and came home a few pounds lighter; the giant weird lump on her leg has been cut off. She is doing wonderfully, for which we thank the fine folks at Hyde Park Animal Clinic.

Crape Myrtle Berries

How funny—I didn't even notice the bug at the lower right till after I posted and then clicked on the photo to enlarge. Nice! Is it responsible for all those stringy bits, or is that the plant itself?

Pods of the Evergreen Wisteria

I love this evergreen wisteria. It blooms much later than the other types and is deep, deep red-purple; its scent also differs from the other varieties, is stronger and yet briefer. Lurvely to the nose! It was blooming up to a week or so ago, actually—now only pods and leaves are left.

Mysterious Eggs on Post Oak Leaves

In both glossy and matte finishes. Ha! Oops, sorry, that's only funny to someone else recently involved in ordering paperback book covers. And maybe not even then. But I'm amused.

Sumac

I took four pictures of the sumac on Saturday afternoon, including this one. All were somewhat lacking and I walked over to the same tree today to try again, only to find that the vivid red had turned to brown in less than a day. Such is the fleeting nature of, well, nature!

The Drunken Butterfly

This lone monarch was flying around the garden yesterday morning quite erratically, even for a butterfly. Fermented nectar??

Sombreuil and Rose Hip

The rose hip is of a different rose whose name I do not know.

USA, Texas, and....Llano?

I'm sure there is someone out there who is much more knowledgeable about flags than I. But Llano is implied.

The Pilgrimage of Hugh and Other Scenes from the Banks of the Llano River

Religion came over him all of a sudden-like

A small but beautiful death (I think he is the Grassshopper King! Look at his little cape)

A river of quartz in granite (and a page from the book of Mrs B)

Buttery lumber! What will they think of next?

Christmas is coming, or maybe they just leave them up all year round. I'm down with that.

Because Who, After All, Can Get Enough of Skateboarding Boy With Bag On His Head?

Skateboarding Boy With Bag On His Head and Other Special Snapshots of Llano

We just don't know what this was all about.

We lunched here. There were no hunters—besides us, that is: Hunters of Love!

The dying wasp I found in the parking lot of Jessie's Hungry Hunter.

All we got at the DQ was an ice cream (trans-fat free!) for Hugh; I was still too full from lunch at Jessie's.

I believe that this wasp is what I mistook for a stone flying through the open window and hitting me in the temple very hard. It wasn't until later when we stopped and I got out that I discovered this poor fellow on the car seat; he was barely alive. If he felt like a stone on my temple, then my head must have felt like Mount Rushmore to him. R.I.P., little wasp.

Can I Keep Him?

Mocks is Back

Where has he been all summer? I think the scrub jays lorded it over him and edged him out.

The Gorey Beetle, 2007

Or, This Year's Model

I am intrigued by the scratchy bits on his head region. Are they scratches, or just part of the pattern? Compare him to 2005 and '06 models.
