Or, Terror After Dark in the Bat-Closet!
Once again, thanks to fabulous website What's That Bug which enabled us to immediately identify this monstrous insect as a Giant Water Beetle, also known as a Toe-biter (insert shudder here!). He was found in our closet around 11 p.m. when I went to get the cat Loretta to put her on the bed with us. Curiously, she had parked herself in the unlikely (for her) spot of just inside the closet door (which was open), facing in. I found the toe-biter about a foot from her, the two of them just looking at one another. I ran for the SCARP container while Hugh ran for the scorpion cardboard and the camera (our teamwork is as a well-oiled machine). After a few rather unsuccessful snaps through the container, we took him to the front porch for release and a photo shoot.
Here he is next to a penny. Did you know that pennies are three-quarters of an inch in diameter?
