I think that this one was possibly a red wasp, a nest of which hangs under the eave of the shed quite close to the spider's web; but it's rather hard to tell once they get all wrapped and mummified.
The argiope is gone today. Where did it go? Did it leave willingly, or did it become a tasty morsel for a passing bird? (Or coon or something? Do small mammals eat large spiders?) This was its dinner last Tuesday, September 21.
Sitting out here with Lo, I just saw a bee pick up & carry away a small bit of hardboiled egg yolk that had fallen to the ground a few minutes before. How odd!
Arghhh! Why, why, why can't I get a decent photograph of the elusive tarantula hawk? So shiny, so purply-black and purply-golden, so Gorey-like as it flies around with its giant legs hanging down. These are the only other snaps I've managed of this guy. In six years. It's sad, really.
